Why go
After a few beach days, Minca is the perfect contrast: forest, cold rivers, single-origin coffee and cooler air less than an hour from the sea. The Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta is also one of Colombia's top birding spots, home to species found nowhere else.
Getting there from El Rodadero
- Tour with pickup at your apartment: covers the ride up and back, and saves you from working out how to move between spots.
- Car or taxi: the road is paved up to the village. It takes 50 minutes to 1 hour from El Rodadero.
- Shared car (colectivo): they leave from around Santa Marta's public market. From El Rodadero you first need to get to the market.
What to do in Minca
- Pozo Azul: cold river pools about 45 minutes' walk from the village.
- Marinka waterfalls: two falls with swimming pools, roughly 1.5 hours' walk away. There's an entrance fee.
- La Victoria coffee farm: founded in 1892, one of the oldest in northern Colombia, with guided tours of its original machinery.
- Los Pinos lookout: wide views of the Sierra and, on clear days, the sea.
- Birdwatching: best early in the morning with a local guide.
A day in Minca, step by step
- 7:00–8:00 a.m.: leave El Rodadero to make the most of the morning, which is usually clearer.
- Mid-morning: hike to Pozo Azul or the Marinka waterfalls and swim in the river.
- Midday: lunch in the village.
- Afternoon: a coffee farm tour and, if the sky is clear, the lookout.
- Before dark: head back to the coast in time for sunset on the beach.
What to pack
- Shoes with good grip: trails get slippery.
- Swimsuit and a small towel for the pools.
- A light rain jacket and a sweater for the afternoon.
- Insect repellent and sunscreen.
- Cash: not every place takes cards.
