The short answer
Pick El Rodadero if you want to do everything on foot: walk down to the beach, go out to eat, shop at the supermarket and come back without calling a cab. Pick Pozos Colorados if you're after rest: complexes with large pools, a less crowded beach and the airport a few minutes away.
Neither wins on everything. It comes down to how you want to spend your days and whether you'll have a car during the trip.
El Rodadero: a walkable city beach
El Rodadero is Santa Marta's best-known beach district. It sits south of the historic center, about 20 minutes by car, and lines the seafront with restaurants, ice cream shops, bars, supermarkets and pharmacies. It's the place for travelers who enjoy some bustle and don't want to depend on a car.
- A bay beach with usually calm water, plus umbrella and chair rental.
- Boats to Playa Blanca leave right from the beach.
- Many buildings have a pool; check each listing to see what yours offers.
- There's nightlife nearby, especially on weekends.
Pozos Colorados: complexes, pools and calm
Pozos Colorados lies farther south, near Simón Bolívar airport. It's a residential area of modern beachfront complexes with large pools and shared amenities. The beach is more open and quieter, with fewer vendors than El Rodadero.
- Great for families with kids, who can spend most of the day between the pool and the beach without leaving the complex.
- Eating out or grocery shopping usually takes a taxi or car. Delivery is widely available.
- The best option if you land late at night or fly out early.
